Places to stay at Old Pound Smithy

Old Pound Smithy

Staying at Old Pound Smithy is about stepping into a quieter rhythm. Our accommodation is designed for couples who value warmth, privacy, and time spent well — places where evenings slow naturally, mornings arrive without rush, and the details have been thought through so you don’t have to.

Set in the North Devon countryside, each place to stay feels calm, grounded, and lived-in. This is not about indulgence or itinerary, but about sharing time in a way that feels unforced and genuine.

A slower rhythm in the North Devon countryside

Days at Old Pound Smithy tend to find their own pace. Guests often arrive with plans, then quietly let them go. There’s space to walk, read, talk, cook, sit by the fire, or do very little at all. Evenings are unhurried, and the dark North Devon night sky often becomes part of the experience — whether from a hot tub, a garden seat, or simply standing still.

It’s a place that doesn’t demand attention, but rewards it.

Thoughtfully set up, all year round

Comfort here is practical and intentional. Our accommodation is warm even in the colder months, with wood burners, cosy interiors, and simple touches that make staying easy and relaxed. Everything you need is in place, without excess or fuss.

Guests regularly mention the small details — not because they are showy, but because they quietly work.

Privacy and space in the North Devon Countryside

Each place to stay is set up to feel private and self-contained. Whether you’re soaking in a hot tub, cooking together, or enjoying a slow morning, there’s space to settle into your own rhythm without interruption.

Some guests come simply to stay. Some guests choose to combine their stay with time in the smithy. Either way, the atmosphere remains the same — calm, welcoming, and unpressured.

Part of a wider way of being

Old Pound Smithy is shaped by making, care, and an appreciation for things done properly. Even for guests who never step into the forge, that ethos carries through the accommodation — in the materials, the layout, and the feeling of staying somewhere that has been built with intent rather than trend.

Many guests arrive looking for rest and leave feeling quietly restored.

Good to know

Our accommodation is best suited to couples looking for:

It’s ideal for those who enjoy being outdoors, appreciate thoughtful detail, and value atmosphere over amenities lists.

If you’re looking for a busy, entertainment-led stay or a hotel-style experience, Old Pound Smithy may not be the right fit — and that’s part of what makes it special.

This charming bolthole has been skilfully and carefully created by local craftspeople, built using original construction methods from bales of straw, with details throughout that will catch your eye, from the straw mouse hiding in the sitting-room wall to the forged metal work in the garden and hand-crafted shelving in the kitchen, all made by the artist/blacksmith owners.

Hot “Breakfast in Bed” Hamper

Breakfast like kings and feast from a basket of treats, delivered straight to your door. Enjoy a delicious hearty hot breakfast, prepared by the incredible chefs at The award winning Farmers Arms.

The Hardy Hole

Nestled in a meander of the stream, right at the far end of the site, well away from the accommodation, sits our giant Tipi, The Hardy Hole.  This is our events space, where groups can gather around the giant fire pit in the evenings, or take part in mindful yoga classes in the mornings.  It is named after the large square hole in the anvil where tools can be fitted during forging.  At 28ft tall, the Hardy Hole is as big as a traditional tipi can get.  The interior is fitted with an ostrich feather chandelier and pampas grass uplighters, providing a beautiful calming experience.

The Shop and Gallery

Next door to the Smithy is our on-site shop and gallery,  offering organic snacks, jams, tea, coffee, ice-creams, cold drinks and food basics. We also sell fire-wood bundles with everything you need to have a fire at your tent. The shop also sells, hand made gifts and souvenirs.  And if you want to book onto one of our courses whilst staying with us, we can do this from the till.

Some stays are about what you do. Others are about how it feels to be there.
