Straw Cottage

Old Pound Smithy

Straw Cottage is a handcrafted retreat unlike anywhere else. Designed and built by artists and makers, every detail has been carefully considered, from the dramatic architecture and bespoke joinery to the vibrant colours, stained-glass windows and handcrafted furnishings.

The original straw bale cottage forms the heart of the home. Here you’ll find a striking open-plan living space beneath soaring vaulted ceilings, where bold colours, handcrafted details and a cosy wood burner create a warm, inviting atmosphere. The bespoke kitchen is fully equipped for everything from leisurely breakfasts to candlelit dinners, while the dining area sits at the centre of the cottage, making it the perfect place to slow down and spend time together.

A handcrafted staircase leads to a mezzanine snug overlooking the living space below. Curl up with a book, enjoy a morning coffee or simply admire the unique architecture from above.

Beyond the living area, the cottage opens into its dramatic timber A-frame extension, where the romantic bedroom enjoys views across the private garden. The king-size bed sits beneath a huge stargazing roof light, allowing you to fall asleep beneath the stars and wake to the changing light of the Devon sky. Rich colours, natural timber and carefully chosen artwork make this a wonderfully cosy and intimate space.

Doors lead directly from the bedroom onto your private garden, where you’ll find a wood-clad hot tub, hanging hammock chair, fire pit and plenty of space to relax in complete privacy. Whether you’re soaking beneath the stars or enjoying a morning coffee outside, the garden feels like an extension of the bedroom itself.

The contemporary bathroom features a spacious walk-in shower, blending modern comfort with handcrafted character.

Although wonderfully peaceful, Straw Cottage is perfectly placed for exploring North Devon’s spectacular coastline, with Clovelly, Bucks Mills, Westward Ho!, Instow and the South West Coast Path all within easy reach.

This isn’t just somewhere to stay—it’s a place to slow down, reconnect and experience a home that has been lovingly created to surprise, inspire and create lasting memories.

The straw cottage is so cosy and quirky, it has all the creatures comforts you need but is hidden away and private enough to be a lovely relaxing place to stay. You do need a car if you want to get put and about but nothing is more than a short drive away and Dave is super friendly. I did some blacksmithing which was booked last minute while I was there and it was a really cool little experience!

This place is a hidden gem! If you are seeking tranquility, comfort and connection with nature then this is the place for you. The cottage is beautifully and thoughtfully designed, we were extremely relaxed and comfortable throughout our stay. The owners are nearby if you need them, but otherwise leave you to enjoy the peace of this idyllic setting. We left Straw Cottage completely refreshed and recharged. Highly recommended.

We had an amazing two weeks in June staying at Straw Cottage. Pretty part of Cornwall. Sweet little cottage with a lovely private garden and a hot tub. We also had a taster session on the blacksmithing course. Such great fun especially as we were complete novices and Dave was an excellent teacher. Both he and his wife Bex were very friendly hosts ready to help out or advise. I fully recommend a holiday here.

We had a lovely stay at Straw Cottage. A sweet little cottage in beautiful surroundings. Still got the use of the hot tub in November as our dogs wandered round the garden. Then all wrapped up inside with the cosy wood burner fired up.

What a find! We had the most amazing stay at Straw Cottage. We really recommend the half day blacksmith course - definitely an experience not to be missed. Dinner at The Farmers Arms was 5 star and the hot tub was very welcome, even on the rainy days! Lots to see and do locally including some great coastal walks. The cottage is surrounded by wildlife and waking up to birdsong every morning was a treat. If you’re looking for a place to switch off, we fully recommend Straw Cottage.

A wonderful, cozy home away from home, Straw Cottage has all the comforts you'll need and the outdoor space is fantastic (hot tub, fire pit, bbq, garden -- what more could you want). Everything is exactly as pictured. Also North Devon has so many sights to see and activities to do, one week wasn't enough to take it all in! Plus, the village around the corner has the incredible Farmer's Arms (do yourself a favour a book a meal here!). All in all, the perfect getaway. Will definitely be returning!
